Like a lot of other things, I don't think you can just say which is better. You have to find which is more suitable for you based on what exactly you want to use it for or for the features you are looking for.

MySQL is one of the most acceptable and common database software out there. You can't go wrong with it. Most of the open source scripts are compatible with MySQL while not many for MSSQL.

As you say you need to do the comparison. So you need to get all that info. Then see which one suits your purpose the best.

For example, if your top requirement is security, then based on your research of the 2, you may want to use the more secure one. If your top requirement is performance, again you have to see which one performs better for your task. The answers may differ depending on your requirements. That is why I say there is no best one. It really depends on your requirement. Just like programming languages and other things.

Arrow Cost effective + Cross platform = MySQL. I got money = MSSQL

Basically if you are looking for cost effective and cross platform solutions - MySQL. If you or your company uses Windows products, have the budget, and prefer easier maintenance using GUI - MSSQL.

Usually after putting policy, host features, programming language used, etc into consideration, you only left one option
