    <table> are they bad?

I was told to avoid using table in my website for its layout.
I know CSS and Xhtml is the standard now and conventional html design or kinda out. I do not know much about CSS and xhtml standard though but I need to know is it worth converting my entire website to fit this requirement?
whats the problem of using tables?

One thing I can think of now..
The problem when using table is when you want to reorganize and restyle your content.. you need to redo all your html ...

if you use xhtml and css properly.. you only need to write a new css..

Table is not 'bad', but they are not meant for organizing layout like most of the 90's websites did.

The web standard defines CSS as the standards for HTML layout

    yes.. there are bad

    1) w3c highly discourages the uses of table in web design..
    2) content and presentation will be mix (try turning off the 'style') to see what i mean..
    3) high bandwith > $$++
    4) usually, tables uses inline styling, so refer back to (3)..
    5) brings not much value (example, the slice and done crap technique from ps)..
    6) headaches when redesign..
    7) if you do websites for living, give you more $
    8) accesibility and usabillity issue..
    9) Clean markup makes it easier to use on cms
    10) SEO-unfriendly
    11) will be shown ugly in mobile devices, palm pilot and screen readers..
    12) more code = more load time , and not saved in cache..
    13) cool peoples have left this 90's style..
    14) cuz i says that they are bad..

and you will fell better when you code a website "the right way"

i agree table are bad (for design). eat lots of bandwidth. and we have to use spacer gif to prevent table collapse. use xhtml and css instead. u just have to edit css file in order to redesign your layout.

but, before u try to create 'tableless' design, better make sure your code valid first. that's the important thing. there is no point having 'tableless' but your code not valid.

    web designer/programmer's view
    --------------------------------
tables are bad bcoz of the style changing's accesibility and conveniences.
CSS/Xhtml is good for SEO, managing layouts.

    manager/client's view
    ---------------------
i don't care wat tables or css/xhtml or whatever webstandards, i just wan my website up and earn money.

    conclusion
    ----------
is actually depends on yourself on how u see it.
if is for a very static page where there wouldn't b any changes or seldom have changes. you can stick to your old table layout.
But if u are to have a dynamic and always layout changing website, stick to the CSS/Xhtml, believe me, u will have be very happy if u complete a website with CSS/Xhtml more then you are satisfied with table layout

    I agree with that.
content based website is still best without table
my first website which is a web game is fully layout on tables, in fact many web games coders still living on tables layout. content and seo thing are not that important for web games site.
