    Blog kills web designer

WordPress is a free publishing platform. It will turn 5 years soon and you will be amazing of how many people are using it now, especially as Blog. Blog works so well for everyone to share personal journal on the web. You can sign up one for free and start blogging almost instantly!

Yes, Blog is free! Free is not good - at least for businesses. That is why, blogging spread like fire among individual users than businesses. It has becoming a New Marketing way for most businesses. Old corporate managers do not want to miss this new marketing opportunity, ended up setting one official corporate website together with an official Blog.

It was never easy to tell my customers that Blog and corporate website are the same. Fancy design still remains as the top-most-wanted feature for most of my customer. It was designed as like to please just the corporate website owner than people visiting it. Or, it may be the idea of web developer to push for beautiful layout, which in most case, the same result can be delivered by a page simple as Google main page.

WordPress has done so well in keeping the design separated from the content. It works like the theme in you Nokia Phone. You can choose to change the look and feel of your screen without entering all your contact in your address book again. This sounds simple but challenge is everyone has to adapt to a single format (post title, post slug, categories) of content, yet work in any page!

We have changed the look and feel of our corporate website several times, without worrying about rebuilding the content. But, you will be surprised with number of corporate websites still built with both content and design combined and ready to have them built from scratch again in their next revamp.

Bloggers are paving the way for the change of corporate website. They take the risk of change, trying up how the new format of content definition should work. Bloggers do not have website in the past. Creating a Blog is not a revamp to them, but something new.

But, for a company with already spending so much in the past in their website, it is hard for them to make the change. They choose not to make immediate decision. They are still on the look-and-see state, but will eventually follow!

There are three things happening now,

    1. Businesses are starting to understand the importance of the goal of creating a website. A goal must be measurable, it can be number of order, number of people downloading your location map, number of support email received, except branding

    2. The platform of Blog, such as WordPress, after a long 5 years of development are now ready to prove that the technology is mature yet simple to user now.

    3. All of us are no longer limiting to our own job of scope. My partner just login to our corporate website, edited one of a page posted months ago and approved some comments. In that 5 minutes works, he turned himself into editor, proof reader, comment moderator, etc. The rules changed. You are taking over works of airline booking agent because you know it can be done online, faster and cheaper.

Business will soon no longer need a web developer!

    Smile Dont agree with that

wordpress and another famous web 2.0 blogging/cms still need web developer + designer.

Why blogging platform famous? because contribution in terms of theme, module and bugs from web developer/designer around the world. that's the beauty of open source.

and yes, old school static web developer 'tak leh cari makan'.

why reinvent the wheel? just be part of growing web 2.0&3.0 developer.

Agreed, i'm running my own web design business, and to me, wordpress just another convenient platform that can use for Blog and website, compare with static, it is much more useful and dynamic.

Just be part of growing web2.0 developer, end user know how to use Wordpress, but when talk about all those technical stuff, they still need us.

    joomla also our problem..

they had very beautiful n elegant theme. their price is also quite cheap compare to what we charge to our clients.

    am i rite?

about now, we get less project to develop website. but a more projects to develop blog n cms. we can't charge at the same price as develop website.

developing a start from scratch website takes about 1-2month to complete. but with wordpress n joomla, we can complete it in 2weeks. agree wit me?

this will kill our bread n butter too... damn....

    Wink

Wow that's a great article. Never thought of blogs that way. However, blogging or creating website are not the all in this sphere of business.

What's more important is traffic and popularity of your site. Businesses still needs people who can drive traffic to them.

    Free Commercial Website like blog

Hi, I recently found this website bizbook.my look quite similar to the concept of blog, you can do it yourself and it is free! Just that blogs are more on personal sharing, but this site bizbook.my is more to business.

I am totally not agree about what you said.I can tell u that web development contain very big market. What you said just a web development for company profile or web design.Blogs or web 2.0 just small part of it.FYI,web 3.0 is coming soon.I have be involve at web development business for 5 years and just started my own company at last years. We don't like involve at web design project but we more focus and specialize web development project or provide internet solution to client. When my client request creative flash design or website design,we always recommend about using CMS or any open source CMS.We will train them to use it.

My point is we have provide internet solution to our client. Not just creative design.....Anyone can be doing website design but not munch people that can provide internet solution to a company.

    gmchun does point out!

You just need to look for your own niche market..Even burger stall get profit although there are hundreds of stall in the same city

Web 3.0 is coming and although it's more on execution part, new tech addaptation will still need the designer. They are the one who really cope up with the pace.

After all, it's all just tool...It's up for the designer on how to monetize it at the end of day, which most of the time, the designer see the opportunity.

But sometimes, there are still people that do not have time even to try CMS, blog platform etc. They still need someone - the web developer/designer who can develop (no matter from scratch or using CMS wasoever) and to take care of their website.

If we look from in other perspective, we still can cari makan actually. And I agree with you guys forumer, that we need to take part in the developing web 2.0 and the coming 3.0. In order to upgrade, personally and also in business.
    regards,

When client "saying not time",it means we should suggest "outsourcing".

Here is what i understand about web 2.0 and web 3.0.
Web 2.0 is about facilitate communication(like friendster, facebook, forum etc), secure information sharing(wikipedia, search engine, photobucket.cms etc), interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web.

But web 3.0 is about semantic web.The Semantic Web is a place where machines can read Web pages much as we humans read them, a place where search engines and software agents can better troll the Net and find what we're looking for.For example,"You want eat japan food for dinner at today".And your ask or type to your computer or web browser, then it will analysis the information at internet based by reputation, nearest location, price, and others. Then, computer automatic book seat for u.Maybe most people think sound like ridiculous. But this the future...See following source about web 3.0.
Web 3.0 - Features by PC Magazine
HowStuffWorks "How Web 3.0 Will Work"

The example web 3.0 that i able view internet is Zoodango - Explore What's Around You.

Note:My final year project when at uni is about semantic web.It is possible.........reading web page and analysis data for you.
