    which one to choose?? (webhost)

    Hi all.

I'm currently working on my school club's website and I'm looking forward to use paid-hosting coz' free web hosting isn't good enuf for me :P

I've been searching for the best and affordable malaysian web-host company and recently the MalaysiaHoster and NetKL caught my attention. But now I'm kinda stuck, which one to choose? I like MalaysiaHoster's starter plan but it doesn't comes with the Fantastico script (which I consider very useful as I'm not any pro-webmaster). The starter plan has very good offers including the 1GB disk space and 15GB bandwidth, for only RM50 per year. Irresistable price. Another bad about MalaysiaHoster starter plan is that it only provide two email accounts >.<

After that I saw the NetKL website. Comparing the disk space+bandwidth and the price, MalaysiaHoster surely win coz' NetKL's Basic plan (cheapest) cost RM60 per annum BUT they only provide 400MB disk space and 7GB monthly traffic (bandwidth). But it comes with Fantastico script and has FREE domain name (if pay per annum). That's what attracts me. lol. Another thing is that NetkL basic plan provides unlimited email accounts.

Both plans has its advantage. When I see MalaysiaHoster's Bronze plan, it's more expensive (RM100/yr) but with 3GB disk space and 40GB bandwidth/month @.@ and the Bronze plan has almost everything.. Only it's RM100/year.. scare my school club can't afford. :$

And, both company uses the cPanel. MalaysiaHoster: cPanel Evolution; NetKL: cPanel X.

Help me to compare both companies' plans and gimme some other recommendations (if have any). I've another question: What actually is "domain parking"? I can book one domain for free and pay later when I wanna use?? Like the MalaysiaHoster, Starter plan provides no Parked Domains but Bronze plan provides one Parked Domain. Anyone could explain it for me, pls?

    Thanksssss in advance!!

    Hello Stevenz,

    Welcome to the forum .

I will say, don't look for host in terms of price first, instead, look for 1)server stability 2)reputation 3)support response time . Take a search around here and read others review (as well as the web hosts' response to their review). Im sure you will find your suitable host.

    Hie there,

For school website normally you do not need so much space and bandwitdh.
Moreover, fantastisco will simplyfy you script installation, but you also must aware that webhoster also can HELP you in installation few script. So, fantastisco are quite low priority.

    MalaysiaHoster.com :
    -------------------
The server is located in Hong Kong with 10Mbps unmetered bandwitdh. The latency from Malaysia so HK is around 60ms. So it should be fast and a lot extra bandwitdh that won't congest the network.

The webhosting company is a newly establish (before this they have other company, indohoster.com if I not mistaken). Created in September 2006. The company have strong customer base to, see :

    Web Hosting Report for MALAYSIAHOSTER.COM

    Netkl.com
    ---------
Established in 2004. So should be a solid hosting company that can support your school website. From the IP, it seems that server is located in Netmyne Datacenter 2 Cyberjaya. From their website, it seems that they have more than one server.

They also provide Cpanel and Directadmin Control Panel ( I love it ).

    Not much information on netkl.com.

    Thank you,

Just to add on Fivio's post.

We have actually helped another potential to find out more information about MalaysiaHoster here:
    http://www.webmastermalaysia.com/pai...oster-com.html

Unfortunately the thread got locked up now because eventually a guy and their founder had some arguments there.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for ur help everyone.

So, MalaysiaHoster is new and has fast server, while NetKL is stable as it was established few years back. I also tested the speed (by clicking the link on MalaysiaHoster.com). It's indeed fast. If a plan states that it has 1 add-on domain, does it mean that I can have two websites under one plan? With two different domains?

I'm actually interested in MalaysiaHoster, coz their price is very attractive.. But I just can't forget NetKL's free domain.. Lol.

But since NetKL is said to be more stable, I think I'd grab their basic plan.. And leave MalaysiaHoster for next time.. bo pien.. have to make one choice

Edit: I think I changed my mind now, I'd stick to MalaysiaHoster.com, coz the space+bandwidth provided more, MySQL databases (unlimited).. 100 per year.. (will get donation from club members :P).
Most probably will get the Bronze plan by end of da year

    Dear Stevenz,

    The starter plan is good

1GB with 15 GB bandwitdh. You will hardly reach 15GB for the first few months. With RM 5 monthly your financial burden can be lessen.

For the database, average usage is normally 2-3. So, unlimited should not be a strong point in deciding You can always ask 1 extra MySQL with good reason for FREE (normal case).

    Thank you,

I see.. Because I thought this MySQL bases are needed for da fantastico scripts.. Actually I don't know nuts about php/mysql stuff :P

I saw the demo cPanel of Netkl.com. I went to the fantastico page n I saw this msg: "You have reached the maximum of allowed MySQL databases. Fantastico can not proceed with installations until you upgrade your account or reduce the number of used databases (for example by uninstalling a script)." Does this mean that mysql databases are needed for each and every script used?

Anyway, thx for the advise.. and I saw ur fivio.com, your linux plan has great features, only the web-space not enuf.. scare "tak cukup makan"..

and comparing DirectAdmin & cPanel, which is better?
for me, DirectAdmin has nice and friendly user interface while cPanel.. no idea. it looks more classical, lol.

What's the actual difference between linux hosting n windows hosting? which is better?

    Dear Stevenz,

    Uhmmm ... long post eh

I see.. Because I thought this MySQL bases are needed for da fantastico scripts.. Actually I don't know nuts about php/mysql stuff :P

Yes, php scripts normally use MYSQL to store the database. So you do MySQL to install forums, galleries, etc. But you do not need until unlimited right ? Do you intend to install hundreds of forums ? Thousand of blogs ? That is why I said earlier, MySQL quantity are not that important. Normal website use 2-3 . For forum, normally one. It simply because the gallery, blogs etc are using the same database as forum (intergrated)

I saw the demo cPanel of Netkl.com. I went to the fantastico page

For demo purposes, they disable disable the MYSQL or put Zero quantity for MYSQL. Why ? Because people can abuse the demo page

Anyway, thx for the advise.. and I saw ur fivio.com, your linux plan has great features, only the web-space not enuf.. scare "tak cukup makan"..

Can't comment. I scare it will fall under self-advertisement

and comparing DirectAdmin & cPanel, which is better?

Cpanel loads of features. A lot of functions. But it is said that the control panel have bugs etc. More source on WebHostingTalk Forums - Web Hosting Discussion

Directadmin ( I love it ), because it is secure as default installation (need patch up too), fast, and simple. Directadmin also have system like fantastisco which is called Instalatron. I do not know whether netkl.com have it or not.

For normal usage, Cpanel and Directadmin will not show any different. Both are great panel. But as server admin (me), I prefer Directadmin. But you are webhosting user, so will not be so much different.

What's the actual difference between linux hosting n windows hosting? which is better?

Linux have more FREE scripts compared to windows. Both serve the purpose, to host website. Windows and linux are the same in objective. But the platform requirement are different.

    Linux ---> use php, MYSQL
    Windows ---> use ASP, MSSQL

You must see which script you want to use. ASP based script ? Then choose windows. PHP based script ? Use linux. Easy ? ^_^

    Hope this will help.

Let me just answer to this question.

Before that, let me ask you, how do you think you can fully occupy the webspace given to you? I'm sure you'll answer that you'll go for the largest plan possible at this moment to make sure there is expansion space for your web site in future.

For your information, cPanel servers do not take into account your mySQL database size as the allocated disk space. You're given 50MB diskspace but your database can grow up to 50GB. Yes, no kidding, mySQL size occupies the server's available hard disk space but not your account space.

Now back to the question again, you need a few GBs for your web hosting account. I can't think of a reason why you would need that much, because normally around 100MB is more than enough for a HUGE web site. Probably you'll need more space if you're running an active online photo album or storing your computer backup.

    Thanks and hope that helps!

edit: By the way, if I were you, I might consider fivio as well. For your information, I have seen them in the industry since some time ago and the representative is available actively in a few forums. They are more reliable and accessible if compared to your chosen companies (no offence to them, this is purely my personal opinion).

You may think it is funny for me to promote others' services when I myself am operating KKHost.Net, the reason is simple: We do not have a local server yet, so since you need fast access speed, I would recommend you to another company that has the server

    All the best!

    Dear Michael,

Oh, I never knew that Cpanel diskspace calculatation for MySQL works like that.

By the way, for Directadmin, webspace + MySQL are calculate together.

    Thx Michael ^_^
    -------

    By the way Stevenz,

Look at this site : Portal Ukhwah
The forum have a large users (25000+) and actively post. However, the total database usage is 340 MB.

There are few things that eat up you webspace :

    1. Photos (high quality, 2 MBytes), normal image < 500 KB should be fine.
    2. Mp3
    3. You computer backup
    4. Video

However, if you run purely forum, like ukhwah.com then the webspace should be alright.

Zerotohundred.com, largest car forum in Asia, have around 1.4 GB database (October 2005). If you reach this level, shared hosting won't do. But the onwer took 6 years to archive that

    Hope this will help.

    Thank you,

    Hi fivio,
Yeah, not many people realise this cheat code in cPanel servers

By the way, I have a client who runs a local soccer forum (sorry, I can't post the URL here without his permission) He receives 15k unique visitors per month (almost 2,000,000 hits) from his forum, that uses only 300MB SQL space, which is also inclusive of the news announcement database.

Of course, all these are excluded from the allocated webspace for his web hosting account

    Thanks!

    Hie,

Nice cheats code. Good for customers but baaaaad for the admins

So, Stevenz, the most most most important thing is to get a reasonable priced and stable company Why ?

    1. They are not fly-by-night company. The comapny financially stable
    2. Proper backup. Normally they have offsite backup, in-server backup and offline backup.
    3. Great support and reliable network. For local, you cannot go else where. TMNET ? Jaring ? TIME ? and few others.

    Thank you,
