Can we just use another hosting/server as a backup?
Hi webmasters,
Just wondering how many of you are using MX backup service?
As we know, we only get 1 MX record from web hosting. If the site down, then all emails send to the site will lost. That's terrible!
I try to look for local MX backup service, but no luck.
Do you know any?
Thank you

Afraid your girlfriend can't get thru is it? (kidding)
Well, a good hosting company should have this worked out. When they realise that their mail server goes... um... 'offline', they need to do something about it fast - fix the server or re-route the mail somewhere else.
But if you're like me and you run your DNS, mail server and web server on the same box, you know your... um... 'in-big-trouble' when your DNS is down. If this is the case, you need to get a second server that mirrors the first server and make modifications to your domain's name servers so that (for example):
ns.site.com -> primary server in malaysia
ns2.site.com -> backup server in uk
Yes, when mailserver, httpserver, **server.. on a same box.. there is nothin much that we can do..
1 box down.. all services go to sleep

my gf use handphone :P
we can easily found free dns backup in internet, but I don't think free MX backup is available.
a backup server will cost more than a MX backup. Website down nvm, the email cannot lost.![]()
I don't really get your question now. MX record is basically a Mail Exchange record that directs mail to a mail server, just like an A record directs a domain to it's webserver.
If you wanted MX record backup, that comes under a secondary/backup DNS.
However, if you wanted to make sure that your mail is always available, you will need more than one mail server - A primary one and a secondary one (for backup). Other than two mailservers (dedicate or shared), I don't think there is any other alternative that can fulfil your requirements. If you only have one mailserver and that server dies, no matter how many MX records you have, it wouldn't make a difference - your server is dead, and your mail will get lost (actually the mail will get bounced).
then.. the better way is.. set your ns1 & ns2 on diff server.. the prob with this conf. is.. how to get your data sync between ur primary & secondary..
But i dont think your email will get bounce if the server go to sleep up to 24H... more than 24H.. maybe..
current mail server will attempt to resend the email untill they get tiredsome mail server will kept sending up to 24H-48H.. other.. maybe less than
its good to have domain registrar with MX setting in their domain manager panel... are they?
correct me..

If you run linux, you can use 'rsync'.Originally posted by zmiey

If after a certain period of time it doesn't send, (a good mail server - sender's mail server) will inform the sender that the message failed to be sent. But i dont think your email will get bounce if the server go to sleep up to 24H... more than 24H.. maybe..

MX configuration isn't part of the domain itself. It is part of the DNS, like the A records and the CNAME records.its good to have domain registrar with MX setting in their domain manager panel... are they?
but can we use resyn on most shared hosting enviroment? mostly not..
so there is no domain registrar in this world offer MX setting in their domain manager? ermmm
