How to know Webhost is overselling + security competency

    Hi,

I'm new here. After reading all the expert opinion here, I learned that for quality, I should not choose a webhoster that oversell.

Which leads me to a few question as I embark on choosing a more cost-effective hoster from my current one.
    1) How do I know that the potential web host is overselling? It'll be tedious if I have to shoot an email to every interested hoster about the number of account they put on a server, and ask for the server spec.

    2) How do I know that the potential web host is able to handle security issues? i.e. patching latest vulnerability on server/scripts/services, and handling attacks i.e. DDos, Defacement

    3) How do I actually know how much CPU and RAM my account needs or is using? I know the usage varies on the number of pages served and scripts used, but how do I know how much?

4)Does bandwidth means Total of Upload and Download?

    5) For domain hosted, is it the same when they say "6" or "1+5"?

Because I'm looking for a webhost for the long haul, and it's tiring changing server every 2 years.

I don't have very popular websites, but I'm thinking of putting more effort into it, and expect traffic to grow, so scalability is something I am thinking of, before moving into a semi-dedicated environment.

Also, is there any websites that track the uptime of the webhost(server+network)? and gives a breakdown for each services? So that we can confirm the uptime given by the webhost.

There is no real way for you to find this out without asking the host and getting an honest answer. I would like to stress that overselling in itself is not a bad thing if done reasonably and managed well. It is generally those who oversell by massive amounts that have the problem. Most hosts will be overselling in some form. It just depends on how well it is all managed.

The number of accounts on a server does not necessarily indicate quality. A server with hundreds of simple websites could out perform a server with just a few websites with forums or cms which have heavy usage.

Server specs also does not necessarily give a good indication. Similar case to the number of accounts above.

You will have to trust that the host is taking necessary steps to secure the server. Things like DDOS can happen to any host at any time. Even if the target is not your server, itcould be neighbouring servers which clog up the bandwidth to the DC where your server is located and thus you are affected too. Things like defacement are also the responsibility of the user. If the user uploads scripts that are vulnerable, you cannot really blame the host. The host cannot go through every script that their users use in order to ensure they are safe to use. No system is 100% secure.

As you say, this really depends on the script being used. It depends on what exactly the script does, how many database queries it runs, what sort of queiries, number of website visitors etc etc. If you have a forum eg, it wil depend on how many users are online at one time, how many posts are made in a given time etc etc. It is something not so simple to put a fixed number on. If your site is over using resources on a shared hosting, then it probably means that you need to move to an environment with more dedicated resources.

Yes, generally data transfer per month is for data in and out.

You need to ask the specific host about this. It could mean 1 main domain with 5 subdomains, parked domains or addon domains. Not quite sure about this.

This depends on whether the host has subscribed to server monitoring which is available to the public to view. As the specific host. Some do their own internal monitoring mainly for them to be alerted of any problems so that it can be fixed.

For 1+5, 1 mean the main domain that you host along with the hosting and 5 others is additional domain that you can host under your account.

so there is not such thing as hosting 6 domain right? if they state that "Domain that can be hosted = 6", its actually 1 main domain under my account + 5 addon domain?

Yes. But add-on domains have not much a difference with the main domain.

understood that hoster cannot be responsible for the script that their user uploads, but i just want the assurance that, when an attack happens (although it may seldom happen), either on the server/network due to bots, hackers, exploits, or maybe just due to an unexpected outage, the hoster has the competency to respond in the quickest time to minimise effect of downtime.

The main domain will have the control panel which you use to administor the addon domains. If you can really host 6 regular domains, each one will have its own control panel.

Depending on the nature of the server or network problem or outage, the host may have to dpend on the server supplier or the data center to solve the problem. There are often a few layers involved to solve certain problems. Sometimes these takes time.
