inaccessible for 3 days? it is UNBELIEVABLE.

truman, you seriously shall consider to temporary search for other hosting provider then recreate at least your client's email with other provider. At least your client email will works and website content can be copy out slowly later.

Thumbs down Day 4 - Emerge Sun Server Down

Emerge alway say "Sun Engineers" are working on it... but what they are doing for 4 days. Building a data centre??.

My assumption, the harddisk crashed, and they go not backup, they are doing data recovery.

Till now cant contact emerge technical support, or CEO Raymond, i really dont know where Raymond is hiding now.

there is nothing to do with the SUN mail.. SUN mail itself is a good mail server but EMERGE they just blame the SUN mail when their own mail server have problem...this is not the 1st time de..let count n see they will down how many days...

Try calling Raymond Chee (CEO of emerge) @ 012-3103888 he wont pick the call, but he will reply your sms, telling that it will be resolved in few hours. his few hours will has been few days already.

I have a lot of reseller accounts under emerge and having sleepless nites, customer calling and scolding. But emerge wont even pickup my calls.

Really sad, can move my hosting else immediately since customers still need their emails, stuck in the pop3 server.
In this case, the correct way is to at least setup a temp. mail server so that normal day-to-day email communication can be carried out first. Once the SUN server is up, then port over the email data.

If the hosting company didnt do that, find another that can do it. Change the DNS records or MX record over. Customers especially businesses cant have their emails down over 24 hours for sure.

You guys may want to use Google Apps temporarily for email services while their mail server is down. I agree with traxport that they should have provided a backup server for this.

in this case wat for we used paid hosting??haha i think emerge themself also don know wat problem occur..if hardisk burn down, change a hardisk need how long??if server broke down, change a server need how long??if server broke down point the customer in one mail server to another mail server need how long??most probably their mail server have too many user n they have no backup server to point even point to another in-used mail server..haha if they point to in-used mail server i think that server will overload n break down again haha...in that case 2000++ customer will call them for support(at that time really "kantoi")...

I was affected by this Emerge fiasco.

Email down. No one pick up the damn telephone.

    Here is their explanation.

"There is a political website hosted in the server. The government blocked it. Hence the email is down"

Make sense? Should I forgive them?

Good luck to anyone trying to run ecommerce script or any PHP script on Emerge servers.

Have worked with many hosting providers in Malaysia and the Emerge servers seems 'funny'.

For example, the .htaccess cant be viewed using FTP.

And the PHP runs with Safemode ON. This will cause problems with Zen Cart and most probably other scripts.

So, it seems their servers are configured only for users with static sites

Here's what one of the developer of Zen Cart has to say about PHP Safe Mode:
    "
Among other things, Safe Mode may prevent the ability to use tools such as currency rate updates, database backups using the mysql-backup-plugin, timer-extensions on pages that are expected to take a long time to process, and in some cases the ability to upload product images. It may also cause unexpected and unpredictable error messages anywhere during the customers' shopping experience.

Zen Cart is not designed to run on servers running PHP in safe mode. It is not regularly tested for safe-mode support, and there are no plans to aggressively handle such configuration. It is prudent to host your ecommerce business on a trustworthy, well-configured, non-overloaded server.

In my observation, running a server in safe mode is only needed if the host doesn't have a good handle on security precautions and configurations, and/or has a lot of unscrupulous customers who leave their sites/accounts vulnerable to intrusion, causing the server to be open to hack attacks. The host has most likely been victim to several serious hack attempts and is now operating paranoid instead of efficiently. To run an ecommerce business on a server having those risks on it is not particularly wise. Most free-hosting accounts are served from servers running in php safe mode due to these same inherent risks in unmonitored and possibly questionable accountholders (and even just newbies who know little or nothing about websites and are just starting out but have a learning curve ahead), leaving security loopholes open in abundance.

All you can do is let your customer know of the risks and let them make their decision. Hopefully they will research further and understand the benefit of finding a host that doesn't *need* to run their server in safe mode.

As per my knowledge, normally government will issue a letter to the IP owner (either the hosting provider or the data center) to request them to remove the illegal content from their server. If still no action taken for certain period of time, then only they will take action like block the IP and so on.

Another way to reduce all these risk is to have your website and email to be hosted on different machine (server). In case the web server were suspended (blocked), your email at least is still working.

The best is to host your website on a dedicated server where you are not sharing any of the server resources with any other client.

of course the cost is much higher for hosting on dedicated server compare to shared hosting.

I was too affected by this. Before I sign up, I was impress by Sun high reliable architecture system as on their page emerge.com.my/webnemailhosting.html .But it looks like the setup is not as it is else the mail server won't be down for these long.......

    Here is their explanation.

"There is a political website hosted in the server. The government blocked it. Hence the email is down"
Oh my god, what kind of explanation is this? Are they hosting mail and web on the sun mail server?

If i am not mistaken...Emerge they seperate their application server n mail server..which mean website n email is hosted in different server..when the email server is down ur website is still can be view(no interuption at all)..so they are nothing to do with the "political website"..because that day is the mail server down not the application server down..
