i believe in content than design. Content is unique to every website. No website has the same content even is the same business line. To stand out competition, content is very important.

For web design, you can get a very attractive design at template.com.my but i did not see any content for sale.

So i believe in content but don't also lack of design.

    just my 2 cents comment

well.. as for me.. i care much about the design more than contents because if the design suck i wont read anything from that page.. if i could choose not to read of course... design play the biggest rules since that's what people see when they first arrive at one's site.. not read the texts first
contents are important too but nice design could make people feel comfortable when they are viewing one's site

    Wink

Hi, though I can't really read the rest of the conversation - I'd post my opinion on this.

Once I started to work seriously on the internet, I thought my webdesign would be the most important thing to do! I tried to be almost perfext at it...To make it a little bit shorter for you - not to waste your time and make you bored...after MONTHS of hard work on webdesign of my sites and after studying, reading, posting at forums, buying the books on usability I realized that for business is design of less importance that I (and probably still manuy of you) think.

Yes, it's nice to have well designed website - but it's not crucial when you;d like to sell something on the net. The most important factor is what you have to offer and if there's demand for it. It's important to have a good sales letter and/or promote the product the right way.

Of course, when I'm offering my webdesign skills and services like that - then the design of the website is important, for sure.

Design ok, but to see a page is better

What does the best and nicest design is worth if nobody see the page.

a nice design doesn't give you a good ranking at google or yahoo.

Important is the content and news. Some designer put the text as image, or use Flash, all things which looks nice, but the searchengines don't see it.

So ask youself a question, does I want the people to find my page, or is it enough to have a nice page for your own ego.

    Well, here's my two cents.

You need a well designed site (readable, nice to look at) - to make a good first impression. Most people come to a site and if desing is bad (isn't readable) , they will just leave in an instant.

You need good content - to make the site sticky, useful relevant content brings more people to your site. When you offer good content, people will tell their friends, and their friends tell their friends, to your site. THat's why forums are popular - content.

I believe in general in order of importance, if you want your site to sell you will have to have(in order of importance , most important to less important) :

    1. Lots of Targeted Traffic
    2. Persusasive Sales Copy
    3. Relevant content
    4. Good design

Depending on the model of your site.

I have a lot of websites , and this is what works after testing for several years.

In any case, the most important thing to remember if you want a site to sell, you have to get traffic(that is targeted traffice - people wanting to buy what you offer). Many web designers often focus on design, while not understanding the business aspect of how to make a site sell.

That's why I've just made available a course for webmasters like us called "The Webmasers BUSINESS Masters Course". If you're interested, you can check it out here:

yep, design is very important for the first impression, and it's often what makes the visitors stay to actually read your content. personally i wouldn't bother to read the content of an ugly website unless it's google's search result which leads me there.

    Both are important

Both are important. IMHO, nice design is good for the first impression. But in long run, the content will determine whether the users want to stick around in your web site.

Quite the similar concept like meeting a girl. If she is attractive in physical appearance, guys will be interested in knowing her. Whether they will have a long term relationship, it will depend on the personality (content). Even a good food also needs to be presentable and look tasty. That's why packaging is very important.

Anyway, do not make your web site looks like a low-budget site. If I see a web site that is not professionally designed, I will not feel safe ordering stuffs from it. Overdesign (too many bells and whistles like animation, blinking text, Flash, distraction) is also bad. It should be used in a way to make the content interesting and enjoyable to read.

i personally thinks both. Design is just a base attraction to vow user before even reading your contents. You've a bad design, visitor might not even bother to start reading and leave the site. Contents is second. After they have make their first choice thinking that its a nice site. Dont want them to make this a single visit? The credit goes to contents. Your contents must be updated often and interesting. With those points, you'll have some regular visitor.
