I think it's difficult to learn Mandarin at first (esp. writing). But once you've got the hang of it, it's actually a whole lot easier than English and French. Mandarin grammar is also quite easy. But then again I've learnt Mandarin in China so that's an advantage.

    Talking

as for written Chinese, pinyin is easy, but the character is much more complicated. I'm the webmaster of Hellochina dot com, welcome to the website making friends and practicing putonghua with the Chinese, most of who are English speaking college students.

I believe if you have the heart to learn, you will be able to master it no matter how many years it takes. "jia you"

from my point of view, learning to spek mandarin is more important. It is just added advantage if you are able to read and write unless you plan to venture into China or HongKong market. haha.

I'm from Chinese primary school, and continue to take up chinese up to SPM. Although SPM result not so good for Mandarin, but I never regret taking Chinese as one of the subject in SPM.

I believe there should be many online tools which can help you translate or pronounce in Mandarin. May have a try.

Learn Mandarin is hard, if you don't learn creatively

    Mandarin is fun, is exciting.

but just why people find it hard? they didn't learn the way that the brain works. How does your brain learn?
We research this topic and find out the reason.

My student learn fast as the result of this research.

You learn more than just Mandarin. For example: you learn not just the word "Shang Hai", you get to learn the history of Shang Hai, the future of Shang Hai, we combine the business world with Mandarin,
How do I know my teaching works?

Check my website's testimony. If you have a definite purpose, then I welcome you to be my student ^_^

learning a new language is never easy
even learning english from beginning is not easy as well

But I like mandarin as when we use different word with the same prononciation, it will create different meaning
