    Hertz or Bytes?

I wanted to buy a laptop, well just a cheap budget laptop considering my budget wasn't there to the extras
I jjust wanted to know whether I should go for more memory or more processor power?
One with a Celeron processor with 2G of RAM or a
a Core 2 Duo with 1G of RAM?
which one I should go for? memory or processor?
AFAIK most processor nowdays is already fast enough for more normal task

I'll go for more processor power.
because? You can easily upgrade the RAM later.

Processor is more expensive than ram. And... it's hard to change processor to suit a mobo.

depends on what you wanted to use with the notebook...
if just for spreadsheet and document processing, video watching, browsing... then you can opt for celeron lar....
if you are using for image/video processing/heavy programming/flash programming/gaming like most webmaster do... then go for core2 processor for and added kick of power....

ram as what mystic says... you can always upgrade it when you have the budget....

    celeron...better don, you will regret...

for this processor and Ram, let me give u some example,

let say a game application, if you have good fast processor, when u start this game, loading is fast

when u play the game, the better ram you have, the faster game u can play...

so processor is for loading and computing(calculation), ram is for your application running...

if you are using those compiler to do your programming work, the more processor speed you have, the faster you can compile your program.

so for my advice, go to faster processor, as mystic said, ram can upgrad, just to ensure the 1G ram is 1 slot only. don get 2 slot of 512MB, it will finish your slot ( 2 slot only in a lappy)

my recomended brand will be HP compaq

    I don't play games
the laptop is mostly going to be utilise by a non-techie person... that is me
there just going to be MS Office, GIMP, XAMPP inside it
yeah, probably some antivirus and firewall thing too

btw, I guess those pre-configured laptops usually utilise 2X512 ram for 1G instead of using 1X1G.
Could we actually ask them to change it to 1X1G RAM instead?

yes, you can request, but some time they need you to pay more, cos 1x1GB cost are more higher..

another case they may advice u to keep 1x512mb, and buy 1x1GB to add in, so total will be 1.5GB...

so I guess going for the extra horsepower is more worthwhile

    btw
is it worth to invest on the windows vista premium than using the provided vista basic?
    whats the difference anyway?

i did not use vista before, but there are alot of feed back that vista alot of not compatible thing...

even a pendrive also need to install driver... and if not mistaken, if you buy vista, it cannot down grade to XP, due to some driver problem...

if u really can downgrade it, the driver for XP are compatible only, not the real driver or stable driver..

i suggest you buy a "freedos" , it could help you save few hundred buck, probably 300 to 400, then only.... find ""windows XP or vista"" your self

Freedos is a very very basic os... it just contain the MSDOS bootdisk functions... its equivalent to no os at all....

like me...i also buy my laptop with freedos and install my own licensed XP Pro...
get the oem outside and its usually cheaper... for os especially windows one's... better go for original so that you can download the patches....
