Inside The Advertising Industry : The Director’s Cut

Ever wondered how those gigantic billboards, iconic TV commercials and newspaper ads are created, sold and became award winners?

Advertising is a 5 Billion Ringgit industry in Malaysia. Not only that, it is also one of the most glamorous industries in the world (advertising has more awards than any other industry). There’s so much talk and hype about advertising, and yet the truth is still such a mystery.

Myth or fact?

1. To get a job in advertising, I must be good in design.
Myth! Only one third of people in Advertising are designers and good in Art. The rest are either good with words (copywriters) or
people who are business minded sociable creatures (account management).
So, I think you still stand a pretty good chance. I have been in advertising for 20 years, I still can't draw to save my life.

2. I must be able to sell ice to an Eskimo
Fact! At the end of the day, advertising is a marketing tool and this is a skill that can be learnt and sharpened.
If you studied marketing, business or mass comm, and you are a social creature, you already have the ticket.
If you studied engineering, law or IT, there’s still hope: many people have made a successful career change.

3. I must be able to write bombastic Shakespearean English
Myth! Look at this ad. Any bombastic words here?

4. I must be hip and cool, because everyone in advertising is so hip and cool.
Myth! Most Advertising gurus I know are geeks and nerds. They're kinda like Bill Gates.

5. I can't earn a lot of money in Advertising
Myth! You can.
