hey how come there's no adobe flash in that poll?

it's actually quite convenient prototyping websites in flash. it's universal, simple and intuitive. you can organize designs in layers and timelines, as well as a library for effective, object-oriented re-use. being vector-based, it gets real easy when you need to extend your designs on to other mediums. it's no problem achieving pixel-perfectness either, just give your design elements whole-numbered sizes and positions, and you're good to go. the actionscripting and animation features may be considered an added bonus. if i recall correctly, bbc radio just reported on how more and more people are starting to use flash for all kinds of purposes.

ofcourse, you still have to use photoshop for photographs, and illustrator for fancy artwork. but this is exactly what adobe wants -- had they bundled everything in under a single program, surely they'd lose money.

fireworks is just like flash except they've bloated it with a whole lot of unnecessary features... it is also more difficult to use. that's probably why it's cheaper too.

hm? hard to believe a software aimed for web design is more difficult to use than one is not. i think the problem is on people dont familiar with it, not on the software

I use the GIMP for most of my graphics editing (you mean editing, right, not design?), unless I'm doing a large amount of thumbnailing / watermarking / format conversion etc, in which case I use ImageMagick:

photoshop is my most favourite. never call a day for me without running photoshop in my machines on that day. hehehe... but still, im using few other softwares too to support my designs and works.

dreamweaver also is my main and favourite website authoring software. fireworks, to be honest i just use it to reduce the image size without losing the quality (for every image) and it really helps a lot. i don't use fireworks for any other purpose. :P

i rarely use illustrator nowadays... i also wondering why eh... if i need vector for flash, i straightly design in flash instead.

to make things short, photoshop rules. nuff said~! XD

Photoshop is the definitive graphics tool. The poll speaks for itself.
